Basic CMYKThe 2015 Business Matters Awards provides a platform to recognise, reward and celebrate all the successful businesses and professional individuals we have in our area.
The awards are now in their 4th year and we are looking for entries from those who can prove business achievement and excellence in their field.
Whether that be in growth, innovation or contribution to the community we want to hear from you. You may have a high achiever or team of excellence within you company – why not put them forward for an extra special award?
Judging will be undertaken by an independent panel of judges representing the business community.
The winners of these awards will be announced at a gala black tie dinner held at the Hilton London Gatwick, South Terminal – Friday 3rd July 2015.

Start-Up Business
Identifying businesses who have already had successes that they want to share, the successes should speak for themselves and the judges will be looking for evidence of rapid expansion, niche-filling, excellent turnover or job creation – or all of the above. Those trading for more than 2 years can not enter this category.

Small Business – (up to 9 employees) – Sponsored by Indigo Tax & Accountancy Ltd
To recognise outstanding performance by a company having a workforce of 9 or fewer and which is based in or has a significant presence in the West Sussex County Times, Crawley Observer & Mid Sussex Times circulation area. The winner of this category will be at the forefront of business development and will demonstrate an innovative ability to identify market opportunities or will be looking to expand.

Medium Business – (10-49 employees)
Entrants for this category should have a clear vision and plans for the future, consideration of international markets, innovation and creativity and overcoming challenges. Winning characteristics could be: a successful turn-around of a struggling or slow-moving company; successful exploitation of innovation; excellence in setting up a major new operation and bringing it into production at a high level of efficiency; pioneering new markets; remarkable growth in size or profits. In a sentence, the judges are looking for something special for all to admire and from which all can learn.

Large Business – (50+ employees) – Sponsored by Hampton By Hilton
To recognise a business for outstanding achievements in growth, turnover and profitability, clear vision and plans for the future, consideration of international markets, innovation and creativity and overcoming challenges. The judges will examine financial performance, innovativeness and the firm’s recent past to determine the quality of the entrants.

Training and Education – Sponsored by Rewards Training & Recruitment Consultancy
Employee development is intrinsic to business success. The winner of this category will have demonstrated a commitment to encouraging and motivating their workforce. Judges are looking for training providers as well as businesses which have an exemplary training programme for their employees.

Green Business – Sponsored by Cisswood House Hotel
The criteria for this category looks at the project as a whole and evaluates how ‘green’ it is. Judges will be looking for evidence that the concepts of sustainable development are embodied within the project. The most common ways to show good environmental and sustainability practice are improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, reducing water use, reducing pollution, improving the environment or improving employees’ well-being. Others could be reducing the amount of car journeys, using local food and local suppliers, addressing impact on climate change or finding new ways to use waste.

An ability to navigate market conditions is crucial for a business to survive today’s difficult economic conditions. How has your business adapted to change, or utilized an innovative idea in order to be a successful business?

Retailing is an essential facet of the British business world. For this category the judges will be looking for evidence of what sets a retailer apart from its competition, either in terms of its achievements, its best practice, or its success.

Young Achiever – Sponsored by Trend
Highlighting the contributions to business in Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex made by people aged 28 and under, this award will identify young workers who have made their mark locally as either an entrepreneur or within a company. The judges will be looking for inspirational stories of young learners, exceptional achievement. The judges will also be looking for entrants to demonstrate commitment to their personal development, and progression through learning, ability to overcome obstacles and barriers in learning or at work, inspirational qualities and attainment of high standards.

Place to Eat
This category encourages entrants from hotels and restaurants, as well as cafes and takeaways. The winner will be defined by a combination of great customer service with consistently fine food.

Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure
Hotels, attractions and events in Horsham, Crawley, Mid Sussex and surrounding areas all help to project a great district image. We live and work in a fantastic area, close to Gatwick and the coastal resorts. The winner of this category will be able to demonstrate a contribution to the local area by making the community stand out.

Manufacturing and Production
Horsham, Crawley & Mid Sussex is home to top-class manufacturing and production firms, working on the national and international stage. Maybe you’re a small food producer, a printers or a furniture manufacturer? How does your manufacturing or production business stand out from the rest?

Customer Service
To reward those companies or particular staff within an organisation that goes above and beyond the call of duty for their customers. The winners of this award will demonstrate a creative and dedicated approach to customer service and will be able to demonstrate to the judges that going that extra mile for customers is integral to positive business.

Business Personality
To recognise an imaginative and creative manager or employee whose individual contribution to the success of a business has been outstanding or who has demonstrated inspired leadership. The judges will look for evidence of improvement to the company directly attributable to the entrant plus testimonials from within and/or without the organisation.

Employee/Team of the Year –  
To recognise an outstanding performance by a individual/team who either usually work together or did so for a special project or task. The judges will be looking for evidence and/or testimonials that confirm the entrants’ ability to work on their own or cohesively as a team, sharing a common understanding that leads to attainment of defined goals that make a real difference to the business.

Outstanding Contribution to the Community – Sponsored by C&T Radmall Funeral Services
To recognise a dynamic contribution to the local community or a commitment to the environment by a company based in or having a significant presence in West Sussex County Times, Crawley Observer & Mid Sussex Times circulation area. This category is not open to businesses or organisations who undertake community activities as a core business. Entrants will be able to show a clear mission – either in a one-off venture or in an ongoing commitment – to helping and/or improving their local community or the environment. The initiative can be anything that would help improve people’s lives and enhance the relationship between the company and the community in which it is based. The contribution might be monetary, or involve the provision of resources and expertise.

Lifetime Achievement
The winner of this award will have made a major contribution to their businesses and to the local community over a number of years. If you know someone who has dedicated themselves to developing their business and contributing to their community, this is your opportunity to recognise and acclaim their success.

Overall Business
The judges will select the Business of the Year from the winners of the other categories.

Reader’s Choice – Sponsored by Sakakini Jewellers
This is the only award that the judges have no control over. All the finalists will be listed in the West Sussex County Times, Crawley Observer and Mid Sussex Times, readers will be invited to vote for their favourite. This award will demonstrate that the business in question has impacted upon and impressed the public.
